Súčasný výskyt dystýmie a veľkej depresie (nasadanie veľkej depresie na preexistujúcu chronickú depresiu) sa v literatúre označuje termínom double depression - dvojitá depresia. Identifikovať podskupinu pacientov s -double- depresiou má význam z hľadiska praktického aj z hľadiska ďalšieho výskumu. Neliečená alebo nedostatočne liečená dystýmia predstavuje zvýšené riziko vzniku veľkej depresívnej epizódy. Výsledky prieskumov poukazujú, že najlepšiu kontrolu veľkých depresívnych epizód pri -double- depresii predstavuje účinná liečba preexistujúcej dystýmie.

Double depression - clinical aspects and treatment

Concurrent presence of both dysthymia and major depressive disorder in which acute major depressive episodes appear to be superimposed on the underlying chronic depression has been defined as a -double depression-. Untreated or undertreated dysthymia represents a high risk for the development of double depression. The results of current research suggest that the most effective control of episodes of major depressive disorder is successful treatment of dysthymia.
