Prožitky úzkosti a strachu jsou prokazatelně spojeny s biologickými ději v mozku. Ačkoli jde často o složité interakce, zdá se, že zásadní role některých neuroanatomických center a neurotransmiterových systémů při vzniku úzkosti je potvrzena. V současnosti je k dispozici široká paleta psychofarmak z nejrůznějších lékových skupin, které lze ke snížení úzkosti a k léčbě úzkostných poruch úspěšně použít.
