Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that yields many restrictions. It is associated with a higher incidence of some psychiatric disorders,
which consequently have a considerable influence on the course of the basic disease. It is thus important to pay special attention
to treatment of psychiatric disorders in diabetics; specifically depression, anxiety, eating disorders and cognitive disorders. Diabetic
patients come to a psychiatric office mainly on recommendation from a diabetologist based on deterioration of their basic disease. Less
frequently, they come from their own will due to subjective psychiatric problems. In order to be able to treat psychiatric problems in
diabetics well, we should occupy ourselves with diabetes and its influence on patients’ life together with the patients. Most commonly
we choose a combined treatment, i. e. psychopharmacologic and psychotherapeutic therapy. We are engaged in with education as well.
Even glycemic control can be improved by proper treatment.
