Epilepsy in adults: classification and treatment

In this review the author summarizes basic principles of epilepsy management. Classification of epileptic seizure and syndrome is essential

for effective pharmacological treatment. Current antiepileptic drugs (AED) lead to satisfactory control of seizures in 70 % patients.

Modern AED are as efficacious as the older medications, but have several advantages and can be used as drugs of first choice in selected

patients. In patients with refractory epilepsy surgical treatment can be helpful.
