Risks and drawbacks of administering antipsychotic drugs in long-term care in patients with dementia

The article deals with the issues and risks of taking antipsychotic drugs in the long-term care in patients with dementia. It provides basic

information on prescribing antipsychotic drugs, their indications as well as the risks in these patients. Also presented are some data concerning

the prescription of antipsychotic drugs both in our country and abroad. The authors highlight the need for a comprehensive approach

to the management of behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), including psychosocial approaches and a detailed

analysis of the particular situation, and especially the need to pay attention to possible physical provoking factors including pain.
