Psychiatry for Practice – the 11th Conference of Outpatient Psychiatrists, which was held in Olomouc, Czech Republic in late November

2014, provided Petr Hrubeš, M.D. (Department of Psychiatry, University Hospital, Hradec Králové and Medical Institution for

Addictive Diseases in Nechanice, Czech Republic) with an opportunity to speak. In his presentation "Treating alcoholism in routine

clinical practice", he reported on the one-year experience with a novel treatment strategy for alcohol dependence in which the

amount of alcohol consumed is reduced while using pharmacological and psychosocial support. This kind of treatment is suitable

for motivated patients with no withdrawal symptoms and attracts to treatment even those who find abstinence unacceptable at

therapy initiation.

Keywords: alcohol dependence, abuse, nalmefene, anticraving therapy
