Alcohol abuse and dependance in psychiatric patients: brief intervention and other options

Most patients treated by psychiatrists are at higher risk of alcohol abuse compared to the general population. Alcohol abuse complicates their treatment because of the interactions between alcohol and drugs, lack of compliance and otherwise. Psychotropic drugs which do not interact with alcohol should be used in these patients. Psychiatrists are advised to apply brief intervention and/or arrange for concurrent treatment of alcohol dependence.

Recent advances in pharmacotherapy in erectile dysfunctions have profoundly influenced our clinical praxis. Efficiency of these medicaments seems to be excellent. But it remains very important not to put out of mind substantial importance of psychotherapy and sexotherapy by men and women with sexual dysfunction. The article Current displays of aggression talks about manifestations of aggression that are usual in contemporary society. The authors summarize and describe various displays of violence, in the form of bullying, domestic violence, aggression expressed via modern communication technologies (mobile and internet communication: SMS, video, photography, Facebook, ICQ, Twitter, Skype, YouTube, etc.). The authors stress dangers of such behavior and their growing incidence, which is documented by several research findings. A survey among 150 outpatient neurologists, psychiatrists and geriatricians aimed to ascertain the current practices in diagnosing and treating cognitive disorders in the Czech Republic. More than half of the patients with a cognitive disorder were diagnosed in moderately advanced and late stages. The results reveal insufficient use of imaging modalities for diagnosis. Most patients with the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease are treated with cognitive enhancers. A widespread use of inefficient nootropics has been shown.

73 % of suicide patiens visited a physician during the month before death. Mostly they complained about unspecified or somatic concerns. Our patient visited a psychiatrist once. Later she was in contact with several physicians. Hospitalized as well. Suicide ideations or tendencies were not explore at any stage of contact.

Our three cases presents variable manifestation of psychogenic movement disorders. To improve the diagnosis of these disorders could be difficult. Treatment depends on a team approach between neurologist, psychiatrist and physiotherapist. Appropriate pharmacotherapy on time is necessary for improving of this movement disorders.

Effective treatment of psychotic disease in acute stage

The paper presents a case report of a positive effect of paliperidone with prolonged action (9-hydroxyrisperidone) on acute symptoms of psychotic disease. It also deals with the occurrence of adverse effects of the drug. Possible reasons for using paliperidone in clinical practice are discussed.

Sexual function in the treatment of depressive disorder with agomelatine

Agomelatin, a novel antidepressant, has favorable effects on sexual function. 20 patients with depressive disorder were treated with agomelatin and sexual functions were monitored according to Changes in Sexual Functions Questionnaire. After 6 weeks of treatment statistical signicantly improvement of sexual functions were observed.
