Trazodone in the treatment of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia

The effect of trazodone on behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia was examined in a postauthorisation noninterventional study in patients suffering from different types of demenia. Trazodone controlled-release (Trittico AC) proved to be an effective treatment with minimal side effects. Sleep disorders, depression, anxiety and agitation were affected to the highest degree. Trazodone represents a more safe alternative to the commonly used antipsychotic drugs.

A treatment individualisation is one of basic ways to patient care improvement. A therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) is its main tool, which uses drug concentration assessment in blood in order to achieve the maximum effect with the minimum risk of toxicity. Results of therapeutically castration by paraphiliac sexual offenders

Overview of results of therapeutically castration by 50 paraphiliac sexual offenders. This surgical procedure substantially reduced specific recidivism. 2 (4%) respondents only committed other sexual delict after therapeutically castration. There are not substantially reduction in nonsexual delinquency. Somatic and psychic negative changes after castration were not frequent. This surgical procedure substantially reduced sexual activity of respondents. Majority of respondents judged the surgery as positive. A small part of respondents have some hesitation about voluntariness their consent to the surgery.

Deliberate self-harm and self-injury is an inappropriate and harmful way of coping with problems. This is a behavioral manifestation observed during childhood and adolescence. This involves superficial self-cutting, self-immolation, overdosing with medicines or other chemical substances, self-beating, self-strangulation, wound self-laceration, hair removal and others. Use of atomoxetine in the treatment of adult ADHD - case study

The case study describes a young adult woman coming to a psychiatric clinic primarily for problems with attention deficit. The patient is diagnosed with ADHD and started on non-stimulant medication atomoxetine, causing improvement in attention, impulsivity and hyperactivity leading to improvement in academic functioning and better time management.

Epilepsy and excoriation (Skin-Picking) disorder

Excoriation (Skin-Picking) disorder is a new diagnostic category presented in DSM-5 and is expected to occur in ICD-11. It is supposed to be linked to a dysfunction in frontal lobe cortex. Glutamatergic transmission may be impaired as well. Case of herein presented patient suffering from comorbidity of excoriation disorder, epilepsy and adjustment disorder with prolonged depressive reaction demonstrates still limited therapeutic knowledge.

Vortioxetine: a review of new antidepressant

Vortioxetine is a novel antidepressant with multimodal mechanism of action, acting as 5-HT3A, 5-HT7, and 5-HT1D receptor antagonist, 5-HT1A agonist, 5-HT1B partial agonist, and serotonin transporter inhibitor. Antidepressant efficacy of vortioxetine 10–20 mg daily has been shown in the total of 13 acute short-term and 1 relapse-prevention controlled trials. Moreover, in 3 placebo-controlled trials vortioxetine improved cognitive functions, independent of antidepressive effects. Vortioxetine was well-tolerated, with low incidence of sexual dysfunction.
