Depression, coronary artery disease, and myocardial infarction

MUDr. Jiří Podlipný
Psychiatrická klinika FN a LF UK v Plzni

There is a strong relationship between coronary artery disease (CAD) and depression. Patients after myocardial infarction often suffer from depressive disorder and this comorbidity can be explained by some common pathophysiological mechanisms. The selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are the most feasible pharmacologic treatment of depression after myocardial infarction. It is also important to keep in mind the influence of CAD pharmaceuticals on the human psyche.
