Patients with schizophrenia as compared to mentally healthy people suffer from increased premature mortality and serious physical morbidity. The aim of this review is to describe how nurses can help physicians in a better care about physical health in schizophrenia patients. The basis of nursing in the prevention of physical morbidity in schizophrenia lies in education and monitoring related to a healthful livingstyle, quality of nourishment, physical activity and substance abuse. This field has been neglected in the Czech Republic so far. Nursing studiesfrom the Czech setting and nursing educational guidelines are still missing. However, we can anticipate a progress in this part of psychiatryin a connection with the initiated mental health care reform and an increasing stress on extramural care for mentally ill people.
