Introduction: Impacts of schizophrenia can be detected in an individual, social and economic levels. This affects life satisfaction in the patientsas well as their caregivers.
Aim: The aim of this review article was to ascertain which standardized assessment methods are used the mostfrequently to evaluate the quality of life in schizophrenia patients.
Methods: We analyzed studies which have been published in electronicdatabases in the period 2000–2014. In selected studies, we consequently performed a content analysis concerning used assessment toolsand the possibility of their application in psychiatric nursing.
Results: The following scales were found as employed the most frequently –Subjective Quality of Life Analysis (SQUALA), The Schwartz Outcome Scale – 10 (SOS-10), Camberwell Assessment of Need (CAN) and TheWorld Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF).
Conclusions: SQUALA appears to be the most frequently used questionnairein the assessment of quality of life in schizophrenia. Comprehensibility, simplicity, and time easiness represent its main advantages.In the community psychiatric care, the Camberwell Assessment of Need also seems to be useful, because it sensitively reflects problemsin the management of social roles.
