New psychoactive substances (NPS) have appeared on the European drug scene for the last 15 years. In the Czech Republic, theirprevalence is noticeable since 2010. NPS represent various chemical groups with various effects imitating the effects of illicitdrugs. They are supplied as legal highs, research chemicals, food supplements or medicinal products. The supply of NPS on thedrug market is changing quite rapidly. Situation on availability of NPS is being monitored by the early warning system. In 2016, 44NPS were newly reported in the Czech Republic, most commonly synthetic cathinones. Serious health consequences are mostlyassociated with synthetic cathinones, synthetic cannabinoids and new synthetic opioids. Early identification of NPS allows forcausal treatment significantly reducing the risk of severe health consequences.
