doc. MUDr. Michal Hrdlička CSc

Psychiatr. pro Praxi, 2005; 4: 189-191

An overview study deals with a summary of current knowledge. At first, studies evaluating the reliability of standardized diagnostic criteria for childhood autism and pervasive developmental disorders in various diagnostic manuals were introduced. In the second part, subtyping efforts were divided into studies based primarily on subtypisation of psychopathological symptoms, and into studies using primarily neurobiological variables. In the discussion it was shown that the identification of narrow autistic subtypes was urgently needed. Further directions in autistic research were suggested.

ANXIOLYTICS AND THEIR MECHANISM OF ACTION

MUDr. Martin Votava Ph.D, Mgr. Viktoria Agová, prof. MUDr. Miloslav Kršiak DrSc

Psychiatr. pro Praxi, 2005; 4: 192-194

Anxiety diseases are one of the most frequent psychic disorders. Drugs, which are currently used, act mainly on GABAergic (benzodiazepines) or serotonergic (antidepressants) systems. This review summarizes the main mechanisms of action of anxiolytics and shows other possible options of anxiety treatment. The current therapy of anxiety is non-specific and thus researchers are still finding other neuromediator systems to influence. The most promising systems in the development of new anxiolytics are noradrenergic system, corticotropin-releasing factor receptors, neurokinin, cholecystokinin or glutamatergic NMDA receptors.

PROBLEMS OF SELECTED MENTAL DISORDERS DUE TO EPILEPSY

MUDr. Jozef Dragašek, MUDr. Milena Drímalová CSc

Psychiatr. pro Praxi, 2005; 4: 195-197

The authors provide an overview of the published literature on epilepsy and mental disorders due to epilepsy linked with their experiences. The mental disorders due to epilepsy are inadequately categorized by the current classifications. There are many mechanisms by which epilepsy may be associated with psychiatric symptoms. Psychiatric disorders in epilepsy often remain unrecognized and untreated. Prompt diagnosis and treatment is important for patient’s well being.
