There is a strong relationship between coronary artery disease (CAD) and depression. Patients after myocardial infarction often suffer from depressive disorder and this comorbidity can be explained by some common pathophysiological mechanisms. The selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are the most feasible pharmacologic treatment of depression after myocardial infarction. It is also important to keep in mind the influence of CAD pharmaceuticals on the human psyche.

Highly important is to differentiate bipolar disorder from the periodic depressive disorder. The goal of the treatment is not only the treatment of single episodes, but the prophylaxis of next episodes. Prescribing of mood stabilisers is essential in the treatment of all phases of illness.

According available literature, the incidence of chronic insomnia is around 10 %. The treatment of chronic insomnia consists most frequently of cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy, hypnotics and antidepressives. Recently we have a lot of information from clinical studies that are testing the effectiveness of therapy of antidepressives and hypnotics of the 3rd generation in the indication of chronic insomnia.
