Depression in the elderly - biological and psychosocial influence, relation of depression and dementia

Depression is one of the most frequent mental disorders of the elderly (together with dementia, delirium, drug addiction). In the article biological influences that share responsibility for occurrence of depression in the elderly are discussed, e.g. total decrease of formation and release of neurotransmitters. Regular physical exercise may improve the health in patients with somatic disorders and with mental symptoms as well. The exact mechanism of its efficacy on the psychic state remains still unclear. Its advantage is relatively easy applicability in ordinary clinical practice especially for certain patient types. The use of physical exercise as a therapeutic method, being a part of the complex therapeutic approach, should be applied according to its specific parameters and indication criteria should be fullfiled.

Introduction: The aim of the study was to find a short and simple psychomotor speed test for easy use in a clinical practice. Valproate has been used like mood stabilizer in patients with bipolar affective disorder for long time. Valproate is demonstrable effective in therapy of manic, mixed episodes and in maintaince and prophylactic treatment and in rapid cycling bipolar disorder. Clinical use limitations of valproate are mostly dose depend side effects.

Quetiapine in the treatment of depressive episode BAD
