Most psychiatrists consider depression to be pharmacoresistant in the setting of an inadequate response to two adequate antidepressant courses. For research purposes and for the testing of various pharmacotherapeutic strategies, several models involving more degrees of pharmacoresistance have been proposed. The present article deals with the treatment options for pharmacoresistant depression in routine clinical practice. They include antidepressant switching, augmentation, and combinations. In patients with severe depression and suicidality, fast-acting antidepressants are an option. The most widespread method of augmentation is that with second-generation...

Marital disagreements can be associated with anxiety in one or both partners. However, it is not possible to determine exactly how marriage contributes to the onset and maintenance of these symptoms. The importance of understanding partner interactions in patients with panic disorder or agoraphobia is supported by a number of studies. The results presented in this review generally suggest that a relationship may affect the severity of panic disorder and agoraphobia and vice versa. The relationship between panic disorder and the relationship between partners is bi-directional: psychological problems adversely affect the relationships and attitudes of...

One third of stroke survivors develop a clinically significant depression (poststroke depression, PSD). A higher risk is in patients with a history of depressive disorder, a more severe stroke and a more pronounced impairment of motor or cognitive functions. Given the link between PSD and higher mortality, worse outcomes, and a more pronounced motor and cognitive impairment, early recognition of PSD and its treatment is a crucial step in a care after stroke. Previous studies suggest the efficacy of antidepressants (ADs) in both the treatment of PSD and the effect on daily functioning including alleviation of motor impairment, and a possible usefulness...

Historically, borderline personality disorder (BPD) has been viewed as alifelong and highly disabling disorder. However, investigations throughout the past two decades have confronted these postulations. BPD is most commonly diagnosed during early adulthood, and the course of the disorder is generally similar, with decreasing symptomatology over time. The review aims to deliver up-to-date information on the concept of recovery in BPD patients, and possibilities to reach it. Acomputerized database search was conducted in PubMed and Web of Science, using various combinations of keywords relevant to the topic. The search was filtered for the time period...

Chairwork contains techniques of classical psychodrama (empty chair, change of roles, double, mirroring), as well as specific schema therapeutic approaches related to working with schema modes. Modes are complex patterns of emotional experience, thinking, bodily reactions, and behaviors that occur after activation of an early maladaptive schema. Chairwork is useful for easier identification of individual modes and their associated thoughts, experiences, and behaviors. This allows to increase self-reflection and subsequently self-control. In the case of internal conflicts, it is possible to conduct dialogues between the individual modes, where the patient...
