Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) has already been used in the treatment of mental disorders for seven decades. ECT has not even lost its efficacy and topicality in this period of time. ECT is suitable to treat pharmacoresistant schizophrenia, where it can even reinduce previously lost treatment response to psychotropic drugs. ECT is also efficient in comorbid obsessive-compulsive symptoms. There is no sense to be afraid of applying ECT even in a depression with serious physical comorbidity in a geriatric...

There is no cure for Tourette‘s and no medication which works universally for all individuals. The decision to use medication should take into account a variety of factors in addition to tic severity such as the child’s age, medical history, and past history of response to medication. For individuals with moderate to severe tics, the newer atypical neuroleptics such as risperidone or older traditional neuroleptics such a haloperidole indicated. Olanzapine, ziprasidone, and quetiapine have shown promise in small studies. More recently, aripiprazole, described as a stabilizer of the dopamine/serotonin system, and showing D2 receptor...

The origin of the antipsychiatry movement dates back to the 1960s. Its representatives of those days, coming primarily from the ranks of psychiatrists and psychologists, criticized the then position of psychiatry. Thomas Szasz, professor of psychiatry, is considered to be the principal ideologist of the movement. The antipsychiatry refused to recognize the existence of mental diseases as symptoms of the disease; on the contrary, it regarded them as a natural response of an individual to the psychosocial stress. However, the original ideas of the antipsychiatry movement were not preserved for long. Actually, it was the trend which demonstrated...
