Epilepsy in adults: classification and treatment

In this review the author summarizes basic principles of epilepsy management. Classification of epileptic seizure and syndrome is essential for effective pharmacological treatment. Current antiepileptic drugs (AED) lead to satisfactory control of seizures in 70 % patients. Modern AED are as efficacious as the older medications, but have several advantages and can be used as drugs of first choice in selected patients. In patients with refractory epilepsy surgical treatment can be helpful.

Synaesthesia is an experience in which stimulation in one sensory or cognitive stream leads to associated experiences in a second unstimulated stream. People with color-graphemic synaesthesia experience vivid, reliable color upon viewing achromatic alphanumeric characters. Recent evidence indicates that synaesthetic color experiences are as perceptually real as actual colors are for non-synaestetic observers, even in internally generated stimuli. Agomelatine is newly registered antidepressant with different mechanism of action in comparison with older drugs. Its structure is similar to melatonin. Agomelatine has agonistic properties to melatonin MT1 and MT2 receptors and antagonistic effect on 5-HT2C receptors. It modulates circadian rhythms and has influence on turnover of dopamine a noradrenalin in prefrontal cortex. Agomelatine is rapidly absorbed; absorption is independent on food intake.
