People aged 80 and older are called superagers if they have the episodic memory of an average sexagenarian and performing at or above 1 SD average performance for age and education on non-memory measures according to published norms. It is a captivating construct from the scientific point of view, that is a counterpart of age-related cognitive decline. The estimation of the prevalence of this phenomenon is 12 % between cognitively healthy older adults in the Czech Republic. Prevalence of amyloid β+ and APOE ε4 is equivalent between SA and non-SA, however SA have larger grey matter volume especially in hippocampus. Grey matter volume is associated...

Importance of side effects of antipsychotics and their monitoring in clinical practice - focused on paediatric and geriatric populations

prof. MUDr. Eva Češková, CSc.

Psychiatr. praxi. 2020;21(1):16-18 | DOI: 10.36290/psy.2020.003

The use of antipsychotics especially atypical ones is increasing including off-label prescription. These trends are significant especially in vulnerable subgroups, paediatric and geriatric populations. Preliminary studies have shown significant differences in both the number and types of adverse events between the paediatric, adult and geriatric populations. Assessment and monitoring of adverse effects are included in our updated diagnostic and treatment guidelines for psychiatric disorders and aimed at adult population. The monitoring of adverse (especially metabolic) events in common clinical praxis continues to be suboptimal; this exposes patients...

Psychiatr. praxi. 2020;21(1):40-46 | DOI: 10.36290/psy.2020.010

Aripiprazole in the form of long-acting intramuscular injections (ALAI) is intended for maintenance treatment of schizophrenia in adult patients stabilized on oral aripiprazole. The recommended maintenance dose is 400 mg administered once a month. It is the first long-acting antipsychotic drug with partial agonistic action on D2 receptors. Two large registration trials have confirmed the efficacy of ALAI in maintenance treatment of schizophrenia. ALAI was more effective than placebo and displayed non inferiority to oral aripiprazole in delaying psychosis exacerbation or impending relapse and in reducing relapse rates. ALAI is well tolerated,...

The text deals with common factors on the part of the therapist and the patient and...
